splinting workshop
I participated in a full day splinting workshop which consisted of a lecture covering indications and contraindications of various types of splints, commonly used splinting materials and when to use them, as well as demonstrations of steps required to make three splints. During the second half of the workshop I engaged in hands on practice and fabricated 2 static splints and 1 dynamic splint, as pictured below.

Research Project
Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation Intervention for Persons with Parkinson’s Disease: A Quasi-Experimental Study
The MSOT program at SVSU has a series of research classes in which students develop a research proposal, obtain IRB approval, and carry out a research project. I worked as the Principal Investigator along with five other classmates to conduct a quasi-experimental study that explored the effects of rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) on upper extremity movement patterns for individuals with Parkinson's disease. We completed 6 sessions with each of 9 participants. At each session, the participants performed a series of 6 functional exercises twice, once with and once without RAS. After completing the data analysis, we determined that the intervention was mildly successful.

Interactive Water Table
In the OT 548 Level I Fieldwork for Psychosocial Conditions class I decided to make an Interactive Water Table for use by the pediatric population. This kit is designed to be stored inside the plastic tub that is acting as the stand in the picture (left). When assembled, children are able to splash in water and experiment with the tools. They can play on their own or with a small group. The goal of this activity is to facilitate social interaction while developing fine motor, sensory integration, and cognitive skills.

Play Therapy Kit; Zipper and Button Practice Set
In the OT 528 Level I Fieldwork for Physical Conditions class I chose to make a Play Therapy Kit. The kit contained a variety of play items that might serve as motivation for pediatric clients. The need for pediatric tools presented because children are rarely seen in this clinic. The therapists requested a kit that included play items for facilitation of fine motor movement patterns. This kit will allow the therapists to provide occupation based treatment for children. I included a zipper and button practice set that can be used by clients of all ages to refine their fine motor skills through use of an occupation based task.

PICO Research Poster
In the OT 500 Critical Inquiry I class I designed a research poster with a partner that discussed the PICO Question: Among persons who demonstrate pain, swelling, and/or deformity associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is the use of splints effective in decreasing symptoms and improving overall functional status? After reviewing several studies, we determined that the evidence is inconclusive. While certain studies statistically supported the use of splints, their effectiveness appeared to depend on the progressive nature of RA, the stage of RA, the type of splint used, and personal characteristics of participants.
