Clinical experience
InterProfessional collaboration
Interprofessional Case Conference, Winter 2014
Occupational therapy students collaborated with medical lab science and nursing students to evaluate and develop an intervention plan for a client described in a case scenario. Due to the restricted amount of reimbursed treatment allotted, we were encouraged to work collaboratively to co-treat the patient. Through our discussion, I learned more about the role of different disciplines in the treatment of eating disorders and how to work as a collaborative interdisciplinary team to ensure clients receive the best overall care.
Service Learning Project: Stroke Simulation/Home Health Care, Winter 2014
This service learning project was conducted by a 6-person group of occupational therapy students in collaboration with the nursing department. The group aimed to educate nursing students on the role of occupational therapy during stroke evaluation and rehabilitation as well as in the home health care setting. I co-evaluated a simulated home health situation with nursing students. After each evaluation session I was able to debrief with the nursing students, giving me the opportunity to educate them on the role of occupational therapy.
Interprofessional Student Education Showcase, Spring 2014
Certificate
A variety of health disciplines from the Health and Human Services Department at SVSU gathered to learn about the role of occupational therapy and to share the role of their profession. Students had opportunity to ask questions of occupational therapy students to further understand the role of this profession in a variety of settings and with a variety of conditions.
Stroke Simulation/Home Health Care Simulation, Fall 2013
This simulation was conducted in collaboration with the nursing department. During the stroke simulation I was placed in the role of a family member. I wore a headset which allowed me to hear from my instructors as they viewed through a one-way mirror. My job was to be an overly concerned family member who asked a lot of questions of the simulated occupational therapists. Next, I participated as an observer in the home health care simulation. As the observer, I was able to give feedback to my fellow occupational therapy peers regarding their performance in the co-evaluation with nursing students.
Poverty Simulation, Fall 2013
Certificate
I participated in an interactive simulation with nursing, social work, and health science majors. During this simulation we were assigned roles to play, which included the head of household, a spouse, and/or children. We were given demographic information and resources to begin our simulated month of living. There were different resources available around the room and we were given access to them for 15 minute periods. Of the four 15 minute periods (each period marking one week), we were charged with deciding how to prioritize our visits and our financial spending. The purpose of the simulation was to gain knowledge of public assistance available and to demonstrate how difficult it can be for individuals in poverty to access these resources.
Interprofessional Student Symposium, Fall 2012
Certificate
Students from the programs offered through the Health and Human Services Department at SVSU attended this event to learn the role of occupational therapy in treating a variety of conditions. My charge was to explain the role of occupational therapy in the treatment of low vision. Students were encouraged to ask questions and to demonstrate their understanding of the information presented.
